I work at a preschool and love when I find something to share with the kids! This book tells a very creative story about friendship, the issues that arise, and what can be done to be a true friend. The illustrations are adorable and very colorful. The Precious Opals truly is a “precious” children’s book!

5.0 out of 5 stars –  My children also liked the way the story was told       July 8, 2014

My husband ordered this book for our daughters, Ages 6 and 7. The message this book represents is valuable. Even with my own daughters I see when their relationship becomes tense due to one of their friends entering the picture and the other one feeling left out. It is important that they learn at a young age the importance of learning to share not only toys, but to also learn how to share friendships. My children also liked the way the story was told by bringing in colorful jewels. Very sweet read.

5.0 out of 5 stars  –  What a wonderful message. The way the story unfolds is clever.    July 6, 2014

Uploaded for my grandchild to read. What a wonderful message. The way the story unfolds is clever in itself. The story gives jewelry an entire new meaning and children will learn as they read.

By DC Musgrove
It is the late 1940’s, in the war torn Philippine islands. Richard “Gunner” McQuaid, a former U.S. Marine fighter pilot, is haunted by the recent horrors of battle during WWII in the Pacific.

Hoping to escape to a more peaceful way of life, he opens an air cargo business on the sleepy tropical island of Lubang. Also hoping for a more tranquil lifestyle, he is joined by two other expatriates, Mattie Adams, a pretty British war widow who runs the General Store in Lubang Village and James “Doc” McCawley, a widowed British Navy surgeon, at the Lubang Village hospital.

All is quiet after the cessation of hostilities in the Pacific and for a brief period of time, life indeed seems idyllic. Until they suddenly run afoul of a vicious band of criminals, trafficking drugs and enslaved youngisland girls; heirs to a century old legacy of the most feared and powerful pirate queen in the history of the South China Sea. Their struggle becomes personal when the pirates target McQuaid and Kiko, an adopted nine year old island girl, on orders from the notorious Madam Chin, who controls the Flower Boat prostitution business along Hong Kong’s Aberdeen Harbor with an iron fist.

And, if life hadn’t become treacherous enough, McQuaid and friends discover they have stumbled into
the path of a secret Chinese conspiracy to gain control over the war shattered island nations of the Far East. Suddenly, they find themselves in a fight for their lives and only “Gunner” McQuaid can save them. That is, if he is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.

4.0 out of 5 stars  –  I don’t want to go to sleep yet…!   March 6, 2014

I enjoyed DC’s style of writing. I felt like I knew the characters well after I was finished reading the book. I got so caught up in the story line, I didn’t want to go to sleep. I especially liked the historical backdrop. I am waiting for the sequel…

5.0 out of 5 stars  –  Adventure is in the air!     December 3, 2013

Even if you are new to historical fiction, don’t let that stop you from reading this high-flying delicious tale of adventure. The setting is fascinating; the characters are real; the action is non-stop. Pilots (or anyone who loves flying) will enjoy the flying elements of the book; you will fly “right seat” along with Gunner as he flies fighter planes and cargo planes; even a sea plane. The author seems to be a bit of a poet at heart; his descriptions are lovely to read and both men and women will enjoy this book. And best of all: there will be more tales of Gunner McQuaid to come! Once I invest in getting to know a character, and care about his/her well being, I like to know the relationship will be ongoing.

I realize it’s a bit cliche to say “there’s something for everyone” in this book, but it’s true. There is a bit of romance, some tasteful sex, adventure, guns, boats, airplanes, and delightful children. What’s not to love.

I highly recommend this well-written novel of post-WWII adventure.

Book Description

By Ronald A. Hughes
Most people can claim a couple, maybe at best three or four stories of harrowing adventure from their life. Ron Hughes lived a life of adventure as both a fireman and a twenty-five year veteran of the California Highway Patrol. Though not every day was filled with near-death incidents, he may have actually exceeded a cat’s nine lives several times over.

His rich sense of humor comes through from the eyes of a peace officer, who protected and served the
public along some of America’s most dangerous highways, in the outback of Los Banos California.
Despite run-ins with characters and situations that might harden the souls of most people, he never took himself, or the job too seriously.

You’ll find most of his stories outrageously funny, some will make you angry; some are downright
heartbreaking and a few, of considerable kindness, will no doubt bring tears to your eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars  –  Heartwarming, funny and exciting!   December 30, 2013
By D. Gardner “…so Thankful” (Bay Area of California) – See all my reviews (REAL NAME) Verified Purchase (What’s this?) This review is from: Runnin’ the Red Lights (Kindle Edition)

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. It takes a special person to take these real-life stories and turn them into a book that you just can’t stop reading! Much credit to Ron and his positive outlook, his hilarious sense of humor and his acceptance of LIFE. I am inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars  –  Charming, delightful, and harrowing, all wrapped up in one memoir!    December 15, 2013
By Writing Down Pat – See all my reviews Verified Purchase (What’s this?) This review is from: Runnin’ the Red Lights (Kindle Edition).

The author went from farming to fatherhood, then fighting fires and crime in California. In this charming and well told memoir, he tells stories, one after another, about his life, his wife of more than five decades, his children, and most of all about the ordinary (and some not so ordinary) citizens he encountered. Some of them he saved; others he could not. But they all touched his life and left an indelible mark on his big Irish heart.

If you loved sitting at your grandfather’s knee and listening to stories of days gone by, you will enjoy curling up with Ron and listening to his stories. Some will make you smile. Some will make you angry. And others will make you cry. This is the quintessential American story of boyhood turning into manhood so missing in society today. I highly recommend it.

Bring your brain cells…, September 29, 2011
Amazon.com customer review of the book: A View Beyond the Stars.

By Sturm and Drang  Amazon, Verified Purchased (What’s this?)

“I have to admit I have a weakness for books that challenge me to challenge my own assumptions. James Burke’s “Connections” did that for me. So did Davis’s “Don’t Know Much About History”. Now DC Musgrove has me asking myself hard questions I didn’t even know I should ask — and I love it. I’ve read several of the great classical thinkers over the years and I can honestly say that Musgrove makes more sense and has more solid data to back his ideas than Aristotle, Plato or any of the rest of the big guys.

“A View Beyond the Stars” is a completely fearless voyage into very deep waters. I lost count of the number of times I’d read a bit and then have to stop and really *think* about what the author was saying. When I was done I felt a bit wrung out. But I came away inspired too. If you enjoy Sagan and Kaku. If you like being taken beyond your mental and philosophical comfort zone, then “A View Beyond the Stars” is a must read.”

5.0 out of 5 stars – Much more then a view beyond the stars   January 4, 2012

By Sherri GilmourSee all my reviews Verified Purchase(What’s this?) This review is from: A View Beyond the Stars (Paperback)

A View Beyond The Stars is a definite must read for those that are in need of deep answers to questions we struggle with everyday. It is cleverly written for those of us layman who are not science majors. I appreciated the amount of research that was put into the book to substantiate the beliefs of both creationism and the big bang theory. As I read I found myself not only confirming my own beliefs, but I had a renewed sense of excitement about the future. I will be revisiting David Musgrove’s View Beyond The Stars again.
